GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro belted out 13 hits en route to a 9-4 victory over UNC Asheville in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday night at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
UNCG (23-11) opened up a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Sean Snell led the inning off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt then scored on a single by Jeremy Roulin. Roulin scored the second run when he stole home on a double steal.
UNC Asheville (9-27) tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run by Tony Wall.
The Spartans answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the fourth on a double by Jake Linney that brought in David Adams who also doubled to lead off the inning.
UNCG put the game away with three runs in the fifth and sixth innings respectively. In the fifth, Roulin led off with a single, stole second and scored on Linney's triple to center field. Linney scored two batters later when Jay Maule tripled off the top of the center field wall. Maule scored on Adams' sacrifice fly to center. In the sixth, UNCG got the first two batters on base. Wes McCall doubled, while Snell was hit by a pitch. McCall scored three batters later on a wild pitch, while Snell came across on a two-run single by Chris Mason.
Patrick Currin (4-2) picked up the win for the Spartans. Currin, the right-hander from Chapel Hill, NC, went five innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Alan DeRatt (1-7) got the loss for UNC Asheville who has lost 11 straight.
Roulin, Linney and McCall had two hits each, while Mason had a team-high two runs batted in. Wall, along with Elliott Arrington and Justin Wilkins paced the Bulldogs with two hits
UNCG has won 15 straight against the Bulldogs. The last UNCA win over UNCG came back on April 29, 1993.
The Spartans return to action for a three-game Southern Conference series at Elon beginning on Friday at 7 p.m. at Latham Park.
