G6: Kent State 8, UNCG 0 (6)
Gabrielle Burns and Kylie Reynolds combined on a no-hitter as
Kent State blanked UNCG, 8-0, in Game 6 at the 2007 Spartan Softball Classic.
Reynolds earned the win for Kent State, firing the final 4-2/3 innings in relief. She struck out 11 and walked one in earning her second win of the tournament. She took over for Burns, who had some early control problems with three walks, a hit batter and two wild pitches in 1-1/3 innings in the circle.
Kent State (3-0) jumped on top 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, taking advantage of a throwing error and a wild pitch. The Golden Flashes extended the lead to 3-0 in the third when Megan Verde lined a two-run homer over the wall in center.
Another UNCG miscue helped Kent State extend its lead to 5-0 in the fifth. Brittney Robinson and Corey Houck hit consecutive singles to open the inning. The Spartans cut down Robinson at third on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Jessica Toocheck for the first out of the inning. But Jamie Fitzpatrick followed with a single to left that skipped through the legs of the Spartan left fielder to the wall. Both Houck and Toocheck came around to score on the play and Fitzpatrick wound up on third base.
Kent State scored three more in the sixth on a bases loaded double by pinch-hitter Amanda Frobase.
UNCG (2-5) returns to action at approximately 2:45 pm when it faces Campbell University. Kent State returns Sunday at 11 am to face Morehead State.
G7: UNCG 5, Campbell 4
UNCG scored two runs in the final two innings to defeat Campbell, 5-4, in game seven of the 2007 Spartan Softball Classic.
Hannah Angel got her first start of the tournament and picked up her first win of the season. She struck out six batters and allowed one walk in seven innings of action.
Campbell (4-2-1) got on the board first scoring two unearned runs on miscues by UNCG third baseman Kara Clouser in the bottom of the first. Campbell also had two hits in the inning, a single from Jessica Huffman and a doubles from Amanda Littlejohn.
The Spartans responded when Clouser recorded her first some run of the season in her first at bat of the game. She drove in teammates Lyndsey Wilson and Laura Olenderski and put UNCG (4-5) ahead 3-2 heading into the bottom of the inning.
Campbell countered with a two-run second inning to take a 4-3 lead. Marian Jones hit a double which drove in Jessica Huffman and Stephanie Pappas. Huffman and Pappas were able to get on base on a Spartan fielding error and a wild pitch.
Down a run heading into the fifth inning, Brittany Ausley hit her third home run of the weekend to tie the game up and sealed the victory with a run scored by Lyndsay Mouse.
The Spartans will conclude the 2007 Spartan Softball Classic at 1 pm tomorrow, when they take on Ohio.
G5: Morehead State 2, Ohio 1
Ohio University loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't get the equalizer as Morehead State came away with a 2-1 win in Game 5 of the 2007 Spartan Softball Classic.
Alex Gjevre earned the win going the distance for Morehead State and scattering six hits. She struck out four and walked one. Ohio's Michelle Sauter took the loss, despite striking out seven in a complete game effort.
Morehead State (1-2) got on the scoreboard in the home half of the first. Courtney Seiler led off with a walk but was forced at second base on Chrissy Timberlake's fielder's choice. Two batters later, Brandy Bucher doubled to the gap in right-center on a hit-and-run. Timberlake raced all the way around from first to score.
The Bobcats (1-5) tied the game in the top of the sixth with back-to-back doubles by Shalena Petrich and Marian Davis with one out. But Morehead State regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, clean-up hitter Brandy Bucher double off the left field wall. After a ground out to second moved pinch-runner Becky King to third, Melody Ross' grounder to second was misplayed, allowing King to score the go-ahead run.
Ohio threatened with two outs in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Kristen Salvatore lined a single just inside the right field line. Amanda Sacks followed with a single to left, moving Salvatore to second base. Debbie Szalejko lined a ball off of the pitcher's glove and everyone moved up a base to load them up. However, Courtney Waters' ball up the middle was backhanded by Morehead State second baseman Melody Ross and she stepped on the bag to end the game.
Ohio returns to action at 4:30 pm Saturday against Campbell, while Morehead State plays next on Sunday morning at 11 am against Kent State.
G8: Cambell 3, Ohio 0
Stephenie Pappas hit a three-run home run to give Campbell a, 3-0 win over Ohio in game eight of the 2007 Spartan Softball Classic.
Lauren Caviness went the distance allowing only two hits for the game. She had two walks and four strikeouts.
The game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the fifth with both pitchers combining for two hits before Campbell put three hits on the board.
Karlie Love started the inning with a single to right field and Olivia Ghiselli followed with a single through centerfield to give Campbell two runners on base. Pappas unleashed her bat and hit a home run over the right field wall to drive send both runners across the plate.
Ohio (1-6) had a chance in the sixth and seventh innings but couldn't get any runners on base, dropping their third game of the tournament.
Ohio will be back in action tomorrow when they take on tournament host UNCG at 1 pm.
