GREENSBORO, NC The UNC Greensboro softball team concluded the UNCG Spartan Classic with a 2-2 record after defeating Maryland-Baltimore County, 3-0 in final day action.
The Spartans were led by Mary Greenway and Whitney Sirois who were both 2-for-3 from the plate. Greenway scored a run and had one stolen base on the afternoon. Amber Harrell was credited with the win after throwing 5.0 innings of work. She allowed no runs on two hits while striking out a season-high 10 batter. She moves to 2-3 on the season.
The Spartans started the scoring in the bottom of the first. After a leadoff single from Greenway, the
Roanoke, VA native moved to second on a wild pitch before stealing second and scoring on an error by UMBC's catcher Kali Shirk.
The Spartans would add another run in the second inning. Mary Catherine Vercoe tallied her first double of the season followed by a single from second baseman Lyndsay Mouse, which moved Vercoe to third base. She was plated on an RBI single from Greenway. UNCG added an insurance run in the fourth when Mouse was plated on an RBI single from third baseman Emily Akiyama.
The Spartans are next in action Friday when they head to Wilmington, NC for the UNC Wilmington Seahawk Classic.

Game One: Cleveland State def. Central Michigan, 5-1
Cleveland State finished tournament play with a 4-0 record after defeating previously unbeaten Central Michigan in their final game. The Viking got on the board in the top of the first after a leadoff double from Whitney Willard, the leftfielder scored on an error from Central Michigan's third baseman. CSU added another run on an RBI double from Lia Gordon who plated catcher Haley Keller.
Both teams tallied a run in the fourth inning but two runs from Cleveland State in the top of the sixth and seventh innings, which included a home run from Keller, put the game out of reach for the Chippewas.
Amanda Macenko went the distance for the second time on the weekend and allowed only one run on four hits while striking out four. Central Michigan's Kari Seddon fell to 0-2 and in seven innings of work allowed five runs on eight hits. Cleveland State's Whitney Willard was 3-for-3 on the day with one run scored and an RBI while Central Michigan's Kim Cozat was 1-for-2 to lead the Chippewas.
Game Two: Central Michigan def. Niagara 4-3
Niagara rallied from a four run deficit to cut Central Michigan's lead to 4-3 but couldn't find the a run late as Central Michigan concludes tournament action with a 3-1 record after a 4-3 win over the Purple Eagles.
CMU's Christina Novak was 3-for-3 from the plate with a run scored and one RBI to lead the Chippewas while third baseman Amy Hudson was 2-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI.
Central Michigan scored two runs in the first inning as a result of an error by Niagara's catcher and tacked one more in the top of the fourth inning. After a leadoff double in the fourth, Novak was driven home on a single from Katie Greenman on the next at bat in what proved to be the game winner.
Niagara mounted a comeback in the sixth inning. Kayla Hines hit a home run and Jenna Baker hit a double before Theresa Healy hit a two-run double to cut the lead to 4-3. CMU's pitcher Pettit came in and earned the save to give starter Christa Delamater the win. Niagara's Theresa Healy was 2-for-3 on the afternoon while pitcher Tiffany McCroy went the distance allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out five.
Game Four: UMBC defeats James Madison, 4-3
Maryland-Baltimore County picked up its first win of the season with a 4-3 come-from-behind win over James Madison in the final game of the Spartan Classic.
The game was scoreless heading into the top of the fourth inning. The Dukes got on the board first after Amanda Fefel walked Jenny Clohan to open the inning. Clohan moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt and rounded the bases with an RBI double from Amber Kirk. A RBI double from designated player Shannon Moxey brought Kirk home. Melissa Hill, who pinch ran for Moxey added a third run to put the Dukes up, 3-0.
The Retrievers were able to rebound in part to several errors in the James Madison outfield. Catcher Shirk reached on an error in the second at bat and after stealing second was plated on a RBI single from Ashley Gray. With three runners on base Emma Thompson hit an RBI double to tie the game at 3-3.
UMBC scored what proved to be the game winner in the sixth inning. Amanda Fefel hit a leadoff single and moved to second on an error by the leftfielder and with a RBI single from Julia Culotta rounded the bases to give the Retrievers the win.
