CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – UNCG shot just 27.5 percent from the floor Saturday, dropping a 63-44 decision at Chattanooga in Southern Conference women's basketball action.
Breonna Patterson led an undermanned UNCG squad with 10 points, all in the first half, and Sarah Folwell added a season-high nine, all on 3-pointers and all in the second half. Janae' Stevenson also scored nine.
The Spartans (3-16, 2-9 SoCon) were playing their second straight game without injured starting guard Natalie Headley, while Patterson sat out the second half with a leg injury. UNCG dressed just eight players for the contest.
Whitney Hood and Kayla Christopher shared game-high honors with 16 points each for Chattanooga (14-6, 9-2 SoCon), which snapped a two-game skid and won its 13th straight over the Spartans. The Lady Mocs are ranked 19th in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25.
"Tonight was a tough loss," UNCG coach Wendy Palmer said. "You have to give the credit to Chattanooga. They are a very good team. Hood does a great job getting low position in the paint, and we just have nothing to match that. Even though we tried to double and do some different things against her, she's playing really well now and she has a great supporting cast."
UNCG found itself down 15-4 in the early going before a Janae' Stevenson jumper and a pair of Patterson 3-pointers – the second from several feet beyond the arc – pulled the Spartans back within five points midway through the first half.
Christopher answered with the first of her four 3-pointers to snap the run, and a pair of Tenisha Townsend free throws put Chattanooga back up by double digits.
A pair of Patterson free throws with 5:21 to go in the opening frame pulled UNCG back to within seven points at 24-17, but Christopher hit back-to-back 3s to put the Lady Mocs' lead in double digits to stay. Christopher would add another triple with 1:52 left in the first as Chattanooga took a 35-19 lead into the locker room.
The Spartans opened the second half on a 6-0 spurt to get back to within 10 points, getting a Stevenson jumper, a pair of Jazz Weaver free throws and a Jarae Savage jumper to make it 35-25 with 18:13 to play.
Christopher again had the answer, knocking down her first two-point basket of the day to stop the run. The Lady Mocs continued to build their lead, stretching it to as many as 21 late in the contest.
The Spartans, meanwhile, hit just two field goals in the final 11 minutes of the game. Dayshaun Richbow got a layup to fall with about 5:27 to play and Folwell hit the last of her three 3s with 2:13 to play.
UNCG held Chattanooga to just 36.8 percent shooting in the game (21-for-57), but the Spartans were just 14-for-51 themselves.
The Lady Mocs were 15-for-18 from the free throw line and out-rebounded UNCG 48-30. Chattanooga pulled down 18 offensive rebounds, converting them into 20 second-chance points. UNCG had just eight points on second chances.
The Spartans turned in a solid night at the free throw line, converting 11 of their 15 chances. That was good for 73.3 percent, their second-best of the season.
Chattanooga held a 26-12 advantage on points in the paint. Despite turnovers being even at 13 apiece, Chattanooga held an 18-4 edge on points off turnovers.
Savage continued her recent rebounding surge, pulling down a game-high eight. She is averaging 10.7 boards per game over her last three.
UNCG completes its road swing with a contest at Samford in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday at 6 p.m. Eastern time.
