SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNCG baseball team fell behind in the middle innings Saturday and could not quite catch up as Wofford won the series finale between the teams 3-2 at Russell C. King Field. The Spartans fall to 11-12 overall and 1-5 in Southern Conference play while the Terriers improve to 11-14 and 3-6.
Redshirt freshman infielder Nin Marrero tallied two hits for the Spartans as well as one of UNCG's two RBI. The Blue and Gold left 12 men on base and struck out 11 times in the contest, struggling to get its offense going for much of the day.
Senior Corey Taylor took the loss, throwing four and two-thirds innings and allowing three runs on seven hits while recording five strikeouts. Freshman Ryan Clark threw three and a third scoreless innings and gave up just two hits.
Wofford struck first in the bottom of the second as James Plaisted led off with a double. Luke Feisal then followed with a RBI single which scored Plaisted. The Blue and Gold responded with a run in the top of the third. Junior infielder Sean Guite walked to lead off the frame then stole second with two outs. After senior infielder Trevor Edwards walked, sophomore outfielder Eric Kalbfleisch singled to left and Guite beat the throw to the plate and knotted the score at one.
The Spartans had a prime opportunity to score in the top of the fourth but with runners on second and third after a sacrifice bunt by Guite, senior outfielders Christian Wolfe and Zach Leach struck out to eliminate the threat.
RBI singles with two outs in the fourth and fifth innings spelled trouble for UNCG as Wofford moved in front 3-1. The Spartans were able to escape further damage in the fifth frame as Clark came in with the bases loaded and got Clark Wise to groundout to end the inning.
Clark continued to pitch well and kept Wofford off the board for the next two innings. Meanwhile UNCG was able to score a run in the eighth to make the score 3-2 thanks to a pair of doubles by senior infielder Lloyd Enzor and Marrero.
Kalbfleisch reached on an error with two outs in the ninth, but junior catcher Cambric Moye struck out looking to end the game.
The Spartans return to the diamond Tuesday, March 23 when they take on crosstown neighbor North Carolina A&T at NewBridge Bank Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
