GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team heads to Wilmington, N.C. to take part in the UNCW Beach Bash Feb. 27 through March 2 held at Boseman Field.

Due to freezing temperatures in the Wilmington area Friday, the first game of the UNCW Beach Bash between Bucknell and Brown will be pushed back to 10 a.m. The Spartans will face the Bison in game two following the first game's conclusion.

The Spartans (4-7) are coming off a 2-2 record in the 2014 Spartan Classic with wins against Army and Hampton. The Blue and Gold start the tournament against Bucknell, where UNCG head coach Janelle Breneman coached from 2001-04, Friday, Feb. 28 at 11:30 a.m. UNCG then plays hosts UNCW Friday at 4:30 p.m.

On Saturday, UNCG faces Ivy league member Brown at 9 a.m. before taking on UNCW for a second time at 2 p.m. at Boseman Field. The Spartans finish the tournament with another contest against Bucknell Sunday at 9 a.m.

Senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) is hitting .406 (13-for-32) with four doubles, a home run and eight RBI. Sophomore Allison Geiner (Raleigh, N.C./Middle Creek) is second on the team with a .382 average on 13 hits and eight runs scored at the leadoff spot. Classmate Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) is third at .343 with seven runs scored, 12 hits, three doubles and four RBI. Twin sister Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) leads the team with two home runs and 11 RBI.

In the circle, senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) is 4-3 in eight starts with three complete games in 34.1 innings and 35 strikeouts. Sophomore Lacey Leary (Norwood, N.C./Spartanburg Methodist) holds a 4.32 ERA in 11.1 innings in five appearances.

Bucknell enters the tournament with a 1-3 record on the season picking up a victory against Bowling Green, 2-0, on Feb. 9. The Bison lost four games due to weather last weekend at the Lancer Leadoff Tournament. Reigning Patriot League Freshman of the Week Jacee Almond leads the team with three home runs and four RBI. Cydnee Sanders holds a team-best .417 average on five hits and three runs scored. In the circle, Lara Bean is 1-1 with a 0.62 ERA in 11.1 innings and has nine strikeouts.

Brown will open its 2014 campaign at the UNCW Beach Bash after a 10-28 record in 2013. Junior Trista Chavez led the team with eight home runs and 32 RBI in 2013. In the circle, junior Jessica Cherness had a 5-13 record in 96.2 innings with 41 strikeouts.

UNCW is 5-6 on the season with victories against Maryland-Eastern Shore, Norfolk State, Liberty, UMBC and Gardner-Webb. The Seahawks are 3-1 at home and Brittany Gamby leads the team with a .440 average on 11 hits, seven runs scored, two home runs and two RBI. In the circle, freshman Peyton Jordan has a 3-3 record with a 2.17 ERA in 42 innings and 27 strikeouts.
