CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The UNCG women's tennis fell behind early and couldn't recover falling to Southern Conference foe Chattanooga, 5-2, Saturday at the UTC Tennis Courts.
UNCG drops to 7-10, 4-2 in SoCon play while Chattanooga improves to 15-3, 6-1 in league action.
The Mocs took a 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches. At No. 3 doubles Kelsey Coots and Claire Mulyadi defeated Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Tile Hill Wood School), 8-1. Chattanooga clinched the point with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles as Kaylene Chadwell and Alexa Flynn took down Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School) and Devon Sutherland (Lake Wylie, S.C./Clover).
In the final doubles match, freshman Yasmin Franco (Largo, Fla./Indian Rocks Christian) and senior Dilara Yurtkuran (Istanbul, Turkey/Gunes Koleji) were leading 3-2 before the point was won.
In singles, Flynn won in straight sets against Falcon, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 singles to give the Mocs a 2-0 lead. Chadwell won by retirement over Anane at No.2 singles as the score was 6-1, 2-3.
Jones clinched the win for Chattanooga after winning 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Coots made it 5-0 after winning in three sets 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
Franco picked up UNCG's first point with a 6-2, 7-5 win against Mulyadi at No. 5 singles.
In the final singles match, Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) won in three sets against Polk, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9). Grinberg battled back to win the second set 6-4 and won the super tiebreaker 11-9.
The Spartans finish the weekend with a match against SoCon opponent Samford on Sunday, April 6 at 11 a.m.
