Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's basketball team (4-5) got back on track with an 82-55 win over Barton (4-4) Monday night. The Spartans trailed after the opening frame and held a five-point lead at halftime but UNCG outscored the Bulldogs 51-29 in the final 20 minutes backed by 17 points from senior guard Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) propelled the Spartans to a much needed 27-point victory.
It was all junior Jade Scaife (Fort Washington, Md./Archbishop Spalding) who had a team-high 12 points shooting 100 percent from the field and connecting on a pair of free throws. Mason, the Spartan's leading scorer was held to just six points, three-of-six from the field, so UNCG turned to its junior class to produce offense for the team. India Timpton (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) dominated in the paint with seven rebounds in the opening 20 minutes. Bailey Williams (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood) had five points including a pivotal three-pointer in the second frame.
UNCG was impressive shooting 52 percent from the field but struggled from the charity stripe connecting on just four-of-eight attempts.
The two teams exchanged baskets in the third period with UNCG holding a 20-18 advantage in points scored. It wasn't until the end of the third frame that the Spartans would spark a run that Barton could not recover from. UNCG outscored the opposition 36-8 in the final ten and a half minutes of play, to secure the win.
Mason went off in the second half tallying 17 points shooting 5-for-13 from the field and was near perfect at the charity stripe connecting on seven-of-eight shots. Sophomore Keli Foster (Hampton, Va./Bethel) stepped up and tallied 11 points in the second half, shattering her career-high. Shanese Harris (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) chipped in eight points while Timpton had six points and six rebounds.
UNCG shot 51.3 percent from the field and held a 22-16 advantage on the boards in the half.
Monday's win marked the eighth-consecutive 20-point performance by Mason. She continues to narrow in on the UNCG all-time record for career points. She now holds the career record for points during UNCG's Division I era after surpassing the previous record backed by her 23 points against the Bulldogs.
Kaitlin Callahan (Windsor, Vt./Southern Maine) scored her first career points in Monday's win, and tallied two more points in just three minutes on the hardwood for UNCG.
The Spartans hit the road for four games beginning Thursday, December 10, when they travel to UNC Asheville. UNCG then heads south to New Orleands, La., for a trifecta of games before finally returning home to Fleming December 28, to host Maryland-Eastern Shore.
