GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG women's basketball welcomes in the Wofford Terriers for a Southern Conference matchup Wednesday night at 7:00. The Spartans enter the matchup 11-11 on the season, and 2-5 in SoCon play. Wofford sports a 12-10 overall mark, and are also 2-5 in league play.
Wednesday's game will be broadcasted on ESPN3, with Jason Patterson handling the play-by-play duties and Phil Cox on color. Live stats will be available for the game via UNCGSpartans.com. UNCG is coming off of its second-straight home victory, having defeated the Western Carolina Catamounts 62-45, Saturday night. The Spartan defense shined in the matchup, holding WCU under its SoCon average of 50 points in the contest. The Catamounts shot 27-percent from the floor and failed to have a player score more than three field goals.
The offense was led by freshman standout Nadine Soliman (Cairo, Egypt/Mokattam Language School). Soliman scored a game-high 18 points, shooting 7-of-12 from the field. Senior Shanese Harris (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) added 17 points off the bench, and went 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.
As a team, UNCG holds opponents to 37-percent shooting from the field. The Spartans are the top rebounding teams in the league, outrebounding opponents by an average of 4.7 per game. The 3.2 blocked shots per game is second best in the league, as UNCG is led by senior India Timpton's (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) 16 deflections. Harris has added 13, and Mariah Wilson (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) adds nine. Wilson has altered six shots over the last two games.
Individually, the offense is led by Soliman's 16.8 points per game average. That average ranks her third in the league, and she is the highest-scoring freshman in the country. Fellow rookie Te'ja Twitty (Rutherfordton, N.C./Rutherfordton-Spindale Central) averages 9.5 points per game, and shoots 52-percent from the floor. Twitty leads the team with 161 rebounds, averaging 7.3 per contest.
Other key contributors for the Spartans include senior Bailey Williams (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood) and freshman Alexis Pitchford (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park). The pair has tallied 75 assists apiece, tying for fifth most in the conference.
Wofford enters having dropped its last four contests and five of its last six matchups. Last time out, Wofford dropped a 77-69 contest at home against ETSU. After going in to halftime leading 44-33, the Terriers were unable to slow down the Bucs in the second half, being outscored 44-25 over the final 20 minutes. Three terriers scored in double figures, led by Kelsey Lambdin's 18 points. Chloe Wanink tallied 17, and Maria Corella added 12.
Wofford scores an average of 64.5 points per game, third best in the league. The Terriers shoot at a league-best 43-percent from the field and 36-percent from 3-point range. Wofford's offense is one of the more efficient in the league, dishing out an average of 14.7 assists per game, totaling 323 this season.
Wanink leads the team with 14.0 points per game average, playing in 33.5 minutes per contest. Maria Corella adds 10.4 points per game, with Kentra Washington scoring 11.9 points off the bench. Grayson Pinholster leads the team with an average of 7.1 rebounds per game, and shoots 51-percent from the field. Lambdin leads the team, shooting 55-percent from the floor and 41-percent from 3-point range.
