GREENSBORO, N.C. – Playing in its regular season finale, UNCG women's basketball heads to Cullowhee, N.C. Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. matchup with Western Carolina at the Liston B. Ramsey Regional Activity Center.
The game is the Spartans' final tune up before the Southern Conference Tournament, slated for March 2-5 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, North Carolina. With a victory on Saturday, UNCG guarantees itself of no worse than the fourth seed, while a win and a Furman loss to ETSU will give the Blue and Gold the third seed.
Earlier this year, the Blue and Gold earned a 62-45 victory over the Catamounts in Greensboro. The Spartans were led by Nadine Soliman's (Cairo, Egypt/Mokattam Language School) 18 points, as well as 17 points from Shanese Harris (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch).
The Spartan defense smothered WCU, holding the Catamounts to just 26.8-percent from the floor, including a 12.5-percent shooting performance from behind the three-point arc.
Western Carolina has fallen in each of its last four contests and sits at 7-21 on the season, including 2-11 in SoCon play. The Catamounts are 5-7 at home on the season.
WCU is led in scoring by Raziyah Farrington, who notches 10.3 points per game. She is followed very closely by Sherae Bonner's 10.0 PPG. Bonner also leads the Catamounts in rebounding at 8.9 boards per contest.
The Catamounts rank last in the SoCon in offensive field goal percentage, knocking down 36.6-percent of their attempts. UNCG, on the other hand, ranks second in the conference in defensive field goal percentage, holding opponents to a 37.2 percentage.
The Spartans will hold a distinct rebounding advantage. UNCG is the SoCon's top team in rebounding margin at plus-4.9, while WCU sits at seventh at minus-3.8.
The Spartans and Catamounts tipoff at 4:30 p.m. Saturday on Senior Day at the Liston B. Ramsey Regional Activity Center in Cullowhee, North Carolina.
