2021-22 MEN'S BASKETBALL SEASON RECAP

By Rob Knox, Associate AD for Strategic Communications

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Under first year head coach Mike Jones, the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s basketball team displayed the character of champions during a 17-win campaign that concluded with a postseason trip to the Roman College Basketball Invitational.

Jones established a winning culture, which is the foundation of his ultimate blueprint to success. The facets of the plan are a tenacious and defensive-minded approach that emphasizes team performances over bursts of individual artistry.

During the 2021-22 campaign, UNCG blended both to create memories that helped the program achieve its sixth consecutive winning season. The best testament to UNCG’s excellence this past year is that almost every player on the roster had their moment in the spotlight.

Keyshaun Langley: Tied his career-high with 21 points against Chattanooga on Jan. 20.

Kobe Langley: His dunk against Western Carolina was the No. 3 play on SportsCenter. He made the game-winning 3-pointer in 73-70 win with three seconds left at Chattanooga on Feb. 17. Made halftime buzzer-beating shots against Wofford, UMBC, and Western Carolina.

Mohammed Abdulsalam: Scored a season-high 14 points against UMass on November 19. He had 13 points each against Northern Kentucky on Nov. 12 and Samford on March 5.

De'Monte Buckingham: He tied a career high with 28 points in season-opening win over North Carolina A&T on Nov. 9 and scored 25 points against ETSU on Jan. 26. Overall, he scored at least 20 points six times, including 21 in final collegiate contest against Boston on March 20. He was named to the All-SoCon Third Team by the media and participated in the 3 x 3 showcase during the Final Four in New Orleans.

J.C. Tharrington: He scored a career-high 12 points against North Carolina Wesleyan and made four 3-pointers in the same game.

Khyre Thompson: He scored a season-high 14 points against Towson on Dec. 14. Tallied 13 points each in games against Coppin State on Nov. 15 and Elon on Nov. 30.

Miles Jones: He had a career high 12 points against The Citadel on Feb. 10. Jones blocked a career-high four shots in a win over Western Carolina on Feb. 23

Jalen White: Scored a season-high 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds against North Carolina Wesleyan on Nov. 24.

Jevon Johnson: He made the most of his time on the floor against Western Carolina on Feb. 7 as he scored his first collegiate points – a 3-pointer.

Dante Treacy: Scored a career-high 24 points on 7-of-11 shooting in a win over Western Carolina on Feb. 23. He was also 8-for-8 from the foul line in the same game. Treacy had 16 points each in games against UMass on Nov. 19 and Samford on March 5.

Bas Leyte: Scored a career best 23 points against Chattanooga in a road win on Feb. 17. Notched his first career double-double in a 58-56 victory over Furman on Feb. 5. In that same game, Leyte had a career high three blocked shots and three assists.

Kaleb Hunter: Scored a career-high 19 points against The Citadel on Feb. 10 and had 18 points against UMass on Nov. 19. He scored all 15 points against Western Carolina on Feb. 7 in the first half and opened the second half with eight straight points in a win over Vermont on Nov. 27.

Points of Pride

  • Among some of the Spartan notable victories this season were triumphs against Coppin State, Furman, Chattanooga, Vermont, UMBC, and Northern Kentucky, programs that competed for their conference tournament championships.
  • UNCG held 13 opponents below 60 points.
  • They had a historical stretch when they held four consecutive teams (UMBC, Furman, VMI, and Wofford) below 60 points from Dec. 15 through Jan. 10.
  • It was the first time -- according to UNCG results and records on file, which date back to the start of the 1967 season -- that a UNCG men's basketball team has held a team below 60 points in four straight contests.
  • The Spartans were 33rd nationally in rebounding margin (+5.2), which led the SoCon.
  • They were 48th in scoring defense (65.0 points per game), which was second in the conference.
  • UNCG also finished second in field goal percentage defense (41.9) and third in offensive rebounds per game (10.88) in the SoCon.
  • UNCG outrebounded 22 teams this season, including five of its last six opponents.
  • UNCG started 4-0 for the first time in its Division I era as a program and for the first time since the start of the 1982-83 season.
  • The Spartans have had scoring runs of 10 or more consecutive points in 11 games.
  • UNCG led by double figures at halftime in three straight games: Feb. 5 at Furman, 32-22 Feb. 7 at Western Carolina, 36-19 Feb. 10 vs. The Citadel, 44-28.

“I just told the guys they were a fun group to coach. It took us about a half of a year for everybody to buy in and once they did, we played some of our best basketball. Once we did, we showed what we were capable of, beating anybody in the league. I told the guys I appreciate them for accepting me as their coach. I know it wasn't easy for them, but they accepted me, and our coaching staff and they did some good things this year and laid a good foundation for the future.”
