Vickie Henson begins her fourth year on the bench as an assistant coach with the Spartans in 2005-06.
Henson, who is involved in all aspects of the women’s basketball program, came to UNCG following a one-year stint as an assistant coach at
Mars Hill College in 2001-02.
Prior to her time at Mars Hill, Henson served as Butler University’s recruiting coordinator in 2000-01. She also served as the recruiting coordinator for Miami (OH) University for two years, and both of her classes were ranked among the nation’s best. Besides her recruiting duties, Henson coached the RedHawks’ post players and coordinated the team’s academic support program. In addition, she helped in scouting team conditioning.
Henson also served as an assistant coach at Western Carolina during the 1997-98 season and one year as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Pennsylvania in 1996-97. She began her coaching career as an assistant at UNC Asheville, where she coached two seasons with the Bulldogs from 1994-96.
She completed many of the same tasks at those jobs as she did at Miami, while also planning team travel and organizing team fund raising and youth fan clubs.
After being named a Converse All-American in 1989 playing for Pisgah High School in Canton, NC, Henson was awarded a scholarship to Wake Forest University. She was named the most improved freshman with the Demon Deacons in 1989-90, before she decided to transfer to UNCG in the fall of 1991.
Henson was twice named first team All-Big South and averaged 16.7 points per game during her two years with the Spartans, ranking first among the school’s Division I leaders.
For her career, Henson shot a school-record 58.8 percent from the floor en route to scoring 967 points. She averaged 16.5 points and 7.3 rebounds during the 1993-1994 seasib and was named Big South Player of the Year.
Henson also ranks among the best in UNCG single-season history in points, points per game, field goals, field goal percentage, free throws made, and rebounds.
Henson was selected as the Western North Carolina Collegiate Athlete of the Year following the 1994 season. Five years later, she was inducted into the Pisgah High School Hall of Fame.
