GREENSBORO, NC Jasmine Byrd scored a game-high 21 points to lead UNC Greensboro to a 70-53 win over local rival High Point in women's basketball action this evening at Fleming Gym. Tonight marked the first meeting between these two Triad area school's since the 1986-87 season. UNCG now leads the all-time series 8-7, and with the victory, snapped a five-game losing streak to the Panthers.
“I thought we played great defense tonight and played a good overall game,” said UNCG head coach Lynne Agee. “The fact that we only turned the ball over 11 times against a
High Point team that likes to play aggressive defense was impressive.”
The Spartans (2-4) limited High Point to 28.4 (19-for-67) percent shooting from the field, which included the Panthers (2-5) missing all 17 of their attempts from beyond the 3-point arc.
Byrd, a sophomore guard from Dumfries, VA who scored a career-high 24 points last time out against Delaware, knocked down 6-of-10 shots and 3-of-4 from long range. Sophomore forward KaLeah Latham made her first career start and scored a season-high 10 points, while Kristen Boone added eight points. Carolina Blair, Shanika Jackson and Megan Chamberlain had seven points apiece.
Katie O'Dell led High Point with 16 points, while Amber Manuel added 12 points and 14 rebounds off the bench in 20 minutes of action.
Senior guard Amanda Eaton tied the UNCG career record of 135 three-point baskets. She drilled a 3-pointer at the 15:58 mark of the second half to give the Spartans a 21 point, 48-27 advantage. UNCG would up its lead to as many as 25, 52-27, on a layup by Latham with 14:20 remaining.
After the Panthers scored the initial bucket of the game, UNCG rattled off nine straight points and would lead 15-4 just 7:35 into the game. The Panthers would get as close as seven, 15-8, a minute later, but UNCG scored the next five points and would lead by double figures the rest of the half and went to the break leading 37-21.
UNCG will host preseason Southern Conference favorite Chattanooga in the league opener for UNCG on Wednesday, December 15 at Fleming Gym at 7 pm.
