Strong bench play leads UNCG women's basketball team to 79-68 win over UNCW

GREENSBORO, NC Jasmine Dixon led a strong performance by the UNC Greensboro bench with a season-high 18 points to send the Spartans into the holiday break with a 79-68 win over UNC Wilmington in a non-conference women's basketball tilt this afternoon at Fleming Gym. The UNCG reserves combined to for 55 points.

 

Dixon, a freshman forward from Reston, VA (South Lake HS), went a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor, and hauled in six rebounds in 19 minutes. Kristen Boone added 11 points off the bench for the Spartans. The freshman guard from Upper Marlboro, MD (Gwynn Park HS) also dished out a season-high seven assists and came up with five of UNCG's season-best 17 steals.

 

Amanda Eaton scored a season-high 12 points, while other reserves, including Meghan Chamberlain (9), Kemena Brooks (7) and KaLeah Latham (6) combined for 22 points. Ashley Current started this afternoon and had seven points and a game-high eight rebounds.

 

The Seahawks (3-5) were led by Lindsay Isom's 16 points. Meaghan Samis and Emily Roberts had 15 and 13 points respectively, while Tanika Harrison added 11 points of her own.

 

UNCG (3-6) scored 30 points off 28 UNCW turnovers. The Spartans also dominated from the free throw line, shooting 77.8 percent (28-for-36) from the charity stripe, while the Seahawks converted only 37.5 percent (6-for-16) of their chances.

 

After a sluggish start for both teams, UNCG used a 10-2 run to take a 15-8 lead at the 9:31 mark of the first half. Chamberlain led the charge with five straight points. UNCW answered with a 17-8 run to take its first lead since the opening minutes, 25-23, on a Meagan Samis' 3-pointer with 3:35 left until halftime. The Seahawks would take a 35-32 lead to the locker room.

 

In the second half, UNCW went up by five, 45-40, with 14:01 remaining, but UNCG rattled off a 14-0 run to go up nine, 54-45, at the 10:24 mark. Dixon fueled the Spartans with eight points during that 3:37 stretch. From there, UNCW would not get any closer than six points, while UNCG extended its lead to as many as 17, 77-60, in the waning seconds of the game.

 

UNCG gets back to action on December 30 at Southern Conference foe Wofford. Tip off is scheduled for 7 pm.
