UNCG women's basketball team downs Davidson, 78-66, for fifth straight win

DAVIDSON, NC -- Junior center Caroline Blair scored a career-high 16 points to lead UNC Greensboro to its fifth-straight win, 78-66, over Davidson in a Southern Conference women's basketball game tonight at Belk Arena. The Spartans shot a season-high 52.6 (30-for-57) percent from the floor to extend UNCG's longest winning streak since the 2001-02 season and in the process, moved into sole possession of third-place in the league standings at the halfway point of conference play.

Blair, a native of Trinity, NC, converted 8-of-11 shots and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for UNCG (9-7, 6-3 SoCon). Sophomore guard Jasmine Byrd scored 14 of her 16 points in the first half, while freshman guard Kristen Boone added 16 points, her third-straight double-digit scoring performance off the bench for the Spartans. Boone also came up with seven steals and dished out five assists.

Emily Callahan led Davidson (9-8, 6-4 SoCon) with 15 points, while Danielle Hemerka and Tia Washington each added 12 points respectively.

Davidson used a 9-0 run over a 50 second span early in the second half to up its lead to 10, 46-36. The run was capped on a pair of free throws by Hemerka with 17:09 to go. UNCG answered right back with a 20-1 spurt to take a 56-47 lead with 7:57 left. In the process, the Wildcats went 10:07 without a field goal. The Spartans continued their offensive on slaught, upping their lead to as many as 15 points, 65-50, with 4:07 remaining.

Both teams shot the ball well in the first half. Davidson knocked down 53.8 (14-of-26) percent of its field goal attempts, while UNCG buried 46.7 (14-of-30) percent of its opportunities. The Spartans led by as many as six, 10-4, on Byrd's second of four 3-pointers in the half at the 17:17 mark. Davidson would take its first lead of the game, 13-12, on a 3-pointer by Danielle Hemerka with 15:10 remaining.

The Wildcats took their largest lead of the half, 28-23, with 5:56 left on a layup by Washington. Davidson would maintain its lead throughout the stanza and went into halftime leading, 37-34.

The Spartans are back in action on Thursday when they visit East Tennessee State for a SoCon matchup at 7 pm in Johnson City, TN. Meanwhile, Davidson visits College of Charleston on Saturday at 2 pm.
