ELON, NC UNC Greensboro lost for only the third time in the last 12 games, 65-59, at Elon in a Southern Conference women's basketball game tonight at Alumni Gym.
Jasmine Byrd led UNCG (11-9, 8-5 SoCon) with 19 points. Ashley Current and Kristen Boone added 11 and 10 points respectively off the bench. Boone, who entered the game second in the nation with 4.21 steals per game, only came up with two takeaways. She now stands one shy of the school record of 83.
Jessica Williams scored a game-high 21 points for Elon (3-16, 2-10 SoCon). Tierra Bumbrey had 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting.
Elon opened the second-half on a 16-6 run to go up by 17 points, 49-32, with
10:55 left. The Spartans rallied with three field goals over a 34 second span to get within six, 52-46, at the 7:20 mark, but Robyn Shipley, a 25.0 percent shooter from 3-point range, buried a trey for the corner as the shot clock was expiring to put the Phoenix back up nine, 55-46.
Byrd got UNCG back to within four, 63-59, on a 3-pointer with 21 seconds left, but Williams buried two shots from the free throw line to secure the win for the Phoenix.
UNCG was limited to only 24.0 percent (18-for-75) shooting on the evening, while Elon converted 44.9 percent (22-of-49) of its opportunities. UNCG led on the glass 48-44, which included a staggering 29 offensive rebounds.
In the first-half, Elon went on a 9-0 run in the early stages of the game to lead 11-2 at the 15:22 mark. Byrd knocked down back-to-back buckets to bring UNCG to within four, 20-16, at 8:13, but that was as close as the Spartans would get. The Phoenix would go back up by as many as 12 points, 33-21, on a pair of free throws by Williams with 1:33 to go. Byrd canned three-of-four free throws in the final 1:09 to send UNCG into halftime trailing 33-24.
Byrd and Current had seven and six points respectively to lead UNCG in the opening stanza. Williams paced the Phoenix with 10 points, while Bumbrey had eight points. The 33 points by Elon ties its best first-half total of the season.
UNCG continues its three-game road swing through the SoCon at Georgia Southern on Saturday, February 5 at 1pm in Statesboro. Meanwhile, Elon hosts league foe Wofford on Thursday at 7 pm.
