GREENSBORO, NC UNC Greensboro lost 55-51 to Western Carolina in a Southern Conference women's basketball game today at Fleming Gym. The Spartans have now lost back-to-back games for the first time since December.
Freshman guard Kristen Boone single handedly kept UNCG (12-11, 9-7 SoCon) in the game with 15 points, eight steals, four assists and four rebounds. The Upper Marlboro, MD native tied the single-game school record in steals for the second time in the last three games and is the first Division I player, men or women, to compile 100 for the year.
Jennifer Gardner led Western Carolina (11-12, 7-9 SoCon) with 12 points and eight rebounds. Teyawna Hardy and Chevon Keith each added 11 points off the bench. The Catamounts enjoyed a 40-33 advantage on the boards.
With the game tied 47-47 with 4:29 left in the second half, Gardner hauled in an offensive rebound and converted the put-back to put Western up for good, 49-47, with 3:40 to go. Amanda Eaton had a chance to tie the game on a jumper from free throw line, but it rimmed out and Western grabbed the defensive board. Gardner sealed the win with a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left.
UNCG trailed by as many as nine, 39-30, with 11:55 left in the second stanza, when Irene Otamiri, Megan Chamberlain and Stephanie Britt each tossed in a basket to get them within three, 39-36 at 9:07. Western went back up 43-36, but UNCG went on a 9-2 run to tie the game, 45-45, with 5:09 to go. Boone scored the first five points of the run and Eaton capped it with a 10-foot jumper.
In the first half, UNCG took a 10-4 lead just 4:43 into action. Junior center Caroline Blair scored back-to-back buckets in the early going. The game was tied for the third time, 15-15, at 8:17, before Western ran off 13 of the next 16 points to take a 10-point lead, 28-18, with 3:38 left until halftime. Boone got on the scoreboard for the first time today on one of her patent steal and breakaway layup's with six seconds left until halftime, cutting UNCG's deficit to six, 28-22, at the break.
UNCG continues its three-game SoCon home stand with a Tuesday date with Davidson. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm at Fleming Gym. Western will visit Elon on Monday at 6:00 pm.
