Box Score

CHARLESTON, SC The UNC Greensboro women's basketball team lost 65-52 to the College of Charleston in a Southern Conference women's basketball game tonight at the John Kresse Arena.

Jasmine Byrd led UNCG (12-10, 9-6 SoCon) with 15 points and four steals. Kristen Boone scored all 11 of her points in the second half after being limited to just three minutes in the first half due to foul trouble. Amanda Eaton added 10 points.

Melissa Chambers and Erica Irick led Charleston (10-11. 7-8 SoCon) with 14 points apiece. Erika Smith had a career-high 13 points and six blocks. Patrice Bryant added nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

UNCG opened the second half on an 18-6 run to erase a 12-point halftime deficit and square the game, 37-37 with 10:03 remaining. Eaton canned a 3-pointer to tie the game for the first time since it was 6-6 at the 16:20 mark of the opening stanza.

The game remained tied at 40-40, before Charleston answered with a 14-4 run to lead 54-44 with 3:40 left. Bryant, the Cougars leading scorer was held to just two points over the first 33:56 of the game, but erupted for five straight points during the run. Charleston retained its lead the rest of the way, going on to the 65-52 victory.

UNCG suffered through its second worst shooting performance of the season in the first half and found themselves down 31-19 at the break. The Spartans made only 4-of-24 attempts from the field, which included beginning the game 1-for-18. UNCG did shoot 76.9 (10-for-13) percent from the free throw line to stay in the game.

Byrd, a sophomore guard from Dumfries, VA (Hylton HS) single handedly kept the Spartans in the game, scoring 11 of the team's 19 points. In fact, she had three of the four buckets in the half. Kaleah Latham's running jumper with 13 seconds remaining accounted for the Spartans only other basket.

Charleston never trailed in the opening half and led by as many as 14 points, 31-17, on a 3-pointer by Rachel King with 2:10 to go until halftime. The Cougars shot a reasonable 38.7 (12-for-31) percent from the field, but only was 1-of-11 from beyond the arc. Chambers led the home team with eight points.

UNCG out rebounded the Cougars 40-38. The win for Charleston evened the season series with the Spartans. Back on January 10, UNCG won in dominating fashion 71-50 in Greensboro.

UNCG begins a three-game home stand on Saturday when Western Carolina comes to town for a 3 pm league match up at Fleming Gym. Meanwhile, College of Charleston will visit Furman on Saturday at 1:30 pm in Greenville, SC.
