GREENSBORO, NC Chris Mason's two-out single brought in Roly Gonzalez with the game-winning run as the UNC Greensboro baseball team came-from-behind to defeat Georgia Southern, 4-3 in Southern Conference action Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Mason, who was hitless on the game before the at-bat, laced a 1-0 pitch into the gap in left center off of
Georgia Southern closer Steve Cogswell to cap a three-run ninth inning. Jeremy Roulin had tied the game one batter earlier with a two-run single to left that drove in Mike Mongiello and Greg Feltes.
Georgia Southern (22-10, 9-2 SoCon) got off to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a run scoring single by Greg Dowling.
The Eagles added a pair of runs in the seventh to push the lead to 3-0. Dowling singled to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brett Pelfrey, then scored on a double by Derrick Smith. Smith scored two batters later on a triple by Brent Stephens.
UNCG (20-10, 10-5 SoCon) got on the board in the eighth inning on a two-out solo home run by Justin Crist.
Wes McCall (4-1) got the win in relief for the Spartans. McCall, the freshman left-hander from Gastonia, NC, struck out two batters in 2-1/3 innings of work. Cogswell (6-2) got the loss for Georgia Southern.
Adam Deleo went 3-for-4 on the day to lead the Spartans at the plate. Jason Hurst, along with Dowling and Pelfrey had two hits apiece for the Eagles.
UNCG travels to Winston-Salem to take on ACC-rival Wake Forest on Wednesday, April 13 at 3 pm at Hooks Stadium. Georgia Southern travels to Macon, GA to face Mercer on Tuesday.
