Cold-shooting second half dooms Spartans in loss to Chattanooga

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro forced 26 Chattanooga turnovers, but the Lady Mocs ended the game on a 15-4 run and took advantage of the Spartans' poor second-half shooting to grab a 67-54 win at Fleming Gym on Saturday afternoon.

UNCG (3-7, 0-2 Southern Conference) put three players in double figures, with Lakiah Hyson and Amanda Leigh scoring 14 points each and Sarah Folwell adding 11.

Shanara Hollinquest (18 points, 13 rebounds) and Jenaya Wade-Fray (19 points, 10 rebounds) had double-doubles to lead the Lady Mocs (6-6, 3-2 SoCon). The duo scored five points each in Chattanooga's game-ending spurt.

The Spartans trailed by just five at halftime, but saw Chattanooga open the second frame on a 10-2 run – with Hollinquest scoring eight of the Lady Mocs' points in that span – to push its lead to double digits at 45-32. UNCG couldn't find an answer early, opening the second period 0-for-7 from the floor before Folwell's 3-pointer was good from the top of the key with 13:21 left in the game.

Folwell's triple started a 15-4 UNCG run – in which Folwell hit another 3 – that freshman Dayshaun Richbow capped with a conventional three-point play to make it a two-point game at 49-47 with 8:20 left.

Wade-Fray answered with a 3 of her own, but Folwell dropped in a layup and was fouled on the other end, converting her free throw to again get UNCG within two.

That would be the last UNCG point for the next 4:16, and the Spartans made just one more field goal the rest of the way. Leigh's jumper just inside the 3-point arc made the score 61-52 with 3:41 to go, but the Spartans didn't score again until Hyson hit a pair of free throws with 23.4 seconds left.

UNCG went just 6-for-34 from the field in the second half, good for just 17.6 percent – a season low for the Spartans in a half.

UNCG stayed in the game early thanks in part of its defense. The Spartans shot just 36.1 percent from the floor in the first half, but forced 15 Chattanooga turnovers, turning them into 14 points.

The Spartans also dominated the paint in the opening frame, scoring 20 points there to UTC's eight.

Chattanooga ran out to a 10-2 lead to open the game, but Hyson had six points in a 13-6 UNCG spurt that cut the Lady Mocs' lead to one at 16-15 with 8:05 left in the first half. UNCG forced five UTC turnovers in the run.

The loss snapped a modest two-game winning streak for UNCG.

The Spartans will complete a three-game homestand on Monday when they host Samford at 12 noon. UNCG is teaming with FOX8 for a food drive to benefit the Salvation Army at the game, with fans gaining free entry to the contest with the donation of a nonperishable food item. Also, the Spartans will welcome nearly 600 fifth-graders and administrators from nine Guilford County elementary schools as UNCG will host its "Education in the World of Sport" clinic prior to the game.
