GREENVILLE, S.C. - UNC Greensboro suffered three long scoring droughts in the first half and never recovered, falling on the road to Furman on Tuesday, 61-46.
Lakiah Hyson led UNCG (7-11, 4-6 Southern Conference) with a game-high 16 points, while Amanda Leigh also finished in double figures with 10.
Raegan Thompson scored 15 points to pace Furman (6-13, 4-6 SoCon), which also got 12 points from Kali Holtfreter. Susan Troutman pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for the Paladins.
The Spartans got off to a quick start, with Hyson and Leigh scoring five points each in the first three minutes as UNCG got out to a 10-6 lead. But Hyson's 3-pointer - the first of her four on the evening - with 17 minutes to play in the opening frame was the last bucket the Spartans would score until Agne Girstautaite's layup with 12:43.
Furman was also struggling from the floor at that point, as UNCG still held a 12-9 lead. But after another Girstautaite layup with 12 minutes to play in the opening period, the Spartans went another 4:33 until Kendra Smith's basket broke the drought.
Smith added another bucket and Monique Floyd added her only basket of the opening frame to tie the game at 20 with 5:27 to play in the first, but that was the last UNCG point before halftime.
The Spartans' third scoring drought of at least 4:17 was the one that turned the tide, as the Paladins finally started to connect from the floor. Thompson's bucket put Furman ahead to stay, and Kelly O'Connor stroked a 3-pointer from the wing just seconds after checking in to push Furman's lead to five at 25-20.
Lee Stephens added a pair of free throws, and Kendra Berry had a free throw and a layup in the last minute as Furman finished the first half on a 10-0 run for a 30-20 lead.
Things didn't get any better for UNCG in the second half, as Furman pumped its lead up to as many as 21 points on Stephens' steal and jumper that made it 56-35 with 6:09 to play.
The Spartans had briefly gotten their deficit back into single digits at the beginning of the second half on Leigh's steal and layup that made it a 30-22 game, but Thompson's layup and a three-point play from Holtfreter put the Paladins back up by double digits to stay. UNCG got no closer than 12 the rest of the way.
Hyson was one of few bright spots for the Spartans, as she was 4-for-6 from 3-point range and 6-of-9 from the floor. She also had a career-high seven steals, including a quick pair in a flurry of action under UNCG's basket late in the game.
After she made the last of 3s with 2:19 to go, Hyson stole the ensuing inbounds pass and got the ball off to Kendra Smith. Smith's jumper missed and Furman came away with the rebound, but Hyson stole the ball again, this time laying it in herself.
The Spartans got both members of Furman's starting frontcourt in foul trouble - Troutman and Lakyn Ledford both finished with four fouls - but the Paladins still won the battle of the paint, 26-22.
UNCG shot just 34 percent from the floor for the game (18-for-53) and was outrebounded 42-30.
The Spartans return home to face College of Charleston on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Fleming Gym. That game will be followed by UNCG's men's team against Samford, also at Fleming.
