SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford's Kelly Dwyer hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 10.7 seconds left, and UNC Greensboro freshman Dayshaun Richbow's layup attempt rimmed out on the other end as the Terriers topped the Spartans on Friday, 61-60, to snap a nine-game losing streak.
The loss spoiled UNCG junior Amanda Leigh's career-high 21-point night. Monique Floyd also finished in double figures for the Spartans (5-9, 2-4 Southern Conference) with 13 points.
Wofford (2-11, 1-5 SoCon) put three players in double figures, with Mahagony Williams leading the way with 14 points and 12 rebounds. April Moorhouse had 11 and Dwyer finished with 10.
After Leigh's jumper rattled home to give the Spartans a 60-58 lead with 35.8 seconds left, the Terriers called timeout. Wofford came up the floor and found Dwyer alone on the wing in front of her own bench, and the senior drained her second triple of the evening to put Wofford ahead to stay.
Both teams called full timeouts, and the Spartans had the ball and the chance to win it. Floyd inbounded the ball to Richbow, who drove the lane but saw her layup go begging. Williams wrapped up the rebound to lock up Wofford's first league win of the season.
UNCG led by as many as five in the second half, taking the lead for the first time in the second half on a pair of Lakiah Hyson free throws with 7:06 left to make it 47-45. A Leigh jumper stretched it to a four-point margin before Moorhouse's layup made it a one-possession game again.
On the other end, UNCG freshman Brey Dorsett hit a 3 from in front of the Spartan's bench to make the score 52-47 with 6:03 to play.
The Terriers would answer with a 9-1 run to take a three-point lead at 56-53, but Floyd's three-point play tied it at 56 with 2:24 left, setting up the thrilling finish.
A Domi Gergely layup put the Terriers back on top, but Floyd answered with a jumper on the other end to force the ninth tie of the game. Floyd then came up with a steal on Wofford's next possession and Leigh hit the jumper that made it 60-58.
Leigh matched her career high with five 3-pointers, breaking out of her recent shooting slump in a big way. She entered the contest 1-for-18 from the floor over her last three games.
Hyson finished the game with three steals, the last of which moved her into a tie for 10th place on UNCG's career list with 164. She is now tied with Jo Zerger, who had 164 from 1990-94.
Richbow had a career-best four assists, while sophomore Sarah Folwell tripled her previous career high with three steals.
The win was just Wofford's third ever against UNCG, which leads the all-time series, 26-3. The Spartans had won four straight in the series.
The loss wraps up a three-game road swing for the Spartans, who return home to host Western Carolina on Monday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
