CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Southern Conference leader Chattanooga opened the game on an 18-2 run and never looked back, downing UNC Greensboro on Monday, 82-63.
Amanda Leigh scored 19 points to lead UNCG (7-15, 4-10 SoCon), but she was the only Spartan in double figures. Lakiah Hyson finished with nine points, while Sarah Folwell and Monique Floyd added eight apiece.
Chattanooga (17-6, 12-2 SoCon) got a game-high 24 points from Shanara Hollinquest in winning its 12ths straight game. Michelle Davis (career-high 21 points), Kayla Christopher (12) and Jenaya Wade-Fray (11) joined Hollinquest in double figures.
The Lady Mocs stormed out of the gate, scorching the nets from 3-point range in building the big lead early. Six of Chattanooga's first eight baskets were 3s, including four in the opening spurt.
Leigh finally got UNCG's offense going with a 3-pointer that she banked in from the top of the key. After Tenisha Townsend's 3 on the other end, Kendra Smith hit a triple of her own. UNCG forced a turnover and Leigh drilled another 3, getting UNCG back within 10 at 21-11 with 12:13 to go in the first.
The Spartans continued to pressure Chattanooga, forcing yet another turnover. UNCG again made good on the extra possession, with Floyd driving the lane for an easy layup that made it 21-13.
Chattanooga would push its lead back to double figures before an Amy Clapper jumper made it 25-17, but that was the last time UNCG would be within single digits. Another Davis free throw and 3-pointer put the Lady Mocs in double digits to stay.
UTC went 8-for-13 from 3-point range in the first half, good for an impressive 61.5 percent. Chattanooga was 16-for-31 overall from the floor in the first and took a 50-31 lead into the locker room.
The Spartans were a respectable 41.9 percent from the floor in the first half, but between the Lady Mocs' torrid shooting and 10-0 advantage in points at the free throw line, UNCG was done in.
UNCG played Chattanooga straight up in the second half, with both sides scoring 32 points.
Chattanooga did a lot of its damage in the game off Spartan turnovers, turning 15 UNCG miscues into 21 points. The Spartans, who had just five turnovers in the second half, scored just nine points off 11 UTC turnovers.
UNCG kept it close on the boards, with the Lady Mocs outrebounding the Spartans by just one, 34-33. UTC entered the contest leading the SoCon in rebounding margin at +7.0 per game. UNCG won the battle of the boards in the second half, 18-15.
Leigh's 19 points were just two shy of her career high, set earlier this season at Wofford. She was 3-for-7 from 3-point range, moving her into a tie for sixth on UNCG's single-season 3-pointers list with former Spartan and current Chattanooga assistant coach Amanda Eaton-Burge. Leigh now has 48 on the season.
UNCG returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 6, when it will host Davidson at 3 p.m. at Fleming Gym. The game will be the Spartans' annual Pink Zone game, as well as UNCG head coach Lynne Agee's 900th career contest.
