GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG wrestling team has had a successful past few weeks as members of the team have competed at the FILA Junior Nationals, U.S. Open and University Nationals, with seven of them coming away with All-America honors.
At the FILA Junior Nationals, Jamel Johnson highlighted the group as he was named National Champion at 63 kg in Greco-Roman. To earn the 63 kg title, Johnson had to defeat teammate Daniel Ownbey in the finals as Ownbey came away with runner-up honors.
Keith Brown and Caylor Williams also had nice finishes at FILA Junior Nationals as they came away in fourth place at 79 kg and 96 kg, respectively. Elijah Adams came in fifth place at 84 kg, as well.
All of these wrestlers qualified for the FILA Junior World Team Trials held in Franklin, Ind. on May 19-20. Johnson, Ownbey, Brown and Williams also earned one year of funded access to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
At the U.S. Open, Michael Gregory came away with a seventh place finish in Greco-Roman at 120 kg. For his finish, Gregory earned All-America honors and became just the fourth UNCG wrestler in school history to qualify for the 2011 Senior World Team Trials
UNCG continued its success in Greco-Roman wrestling at University Nationals recently. At the event, Eric Chandler earned second-place honors in Greco-Roman at 60 kg and Caylor Williams finished in third at 96 kg. Both wrestlers earned All-America honors at the event and Chandler became the fifth UNCG wrestler to qualify for the Senior World Team Trials.
