GREENVILLE, S.C. – The UNCG women's basketball team suffered from another poor shooting performance Saturday as Furman picked up a 67-48 Southern Conference victory at Timmons Arena. The Spartans fell to 3-11 overall and 0-5 in league play while the Paladins notched their second-straight win to improve to 6-8 and 2-3.

Junior forward Janae' Stevenson (Columbia, S.C./Eau Claire) recorded her second double-double of the season and seventh of her career with 15 points and 11 rebounds, including seven offensive boards. She also racked up three blocks to push her career total to 93. Freshman guard Ebona Goins (Greensboro, N.C./Dudley) set a new personal high on the glass, pulling down six rebounds.

UNCG took 74 shots in the game, thanks in part to 25 offensive rebounds, but could only hit 22 for 30 percent. Furman knocked down 28 of its 60 attempts to finish at 47 percent. The teams combined to turn the ball over 38 times and each squad netted 18 points of those miscues. Thanks to its work on the offensive glass, the Spartans ended up with a 46-43 advantage in rebounding.

In the first four minutes of the game, Furman was able to build a 6-0 lead before Stevenson hit a jumper for UNCG's first points. She would then tie the contest at six with another basket at the 14:04 mark. However, the Spartans hit a seven-minute scoring drought as the Paladins built their cushion to 16-6 with 8:54 left in the half. A layup by freshman guard Jazmine Missouri (Kensington, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) brought UNCG to within four points at 16-12 as the clock wound down under six minutes, but Patrice Butler hit a layup at the 2:57 mark to give the home side a double-digit advantage (24-14).

A steal by junior Breonna Patterson (Greensboro, N.C./Dudley) resulted in a layup for sophomore Jessica Collins (Raleigh, N.C./Eckerd College) and made the score 24-18 with 2:10 remaining in the half, but Furman closed the period on an 8-2 run, capped off by a running layup at the buzzer by Kaitlin Murphy to leave the Paladins with a 32-20 edge.

Stevenson paced the Blue and Gold in the first 20 minutes with eight points while Butler scored the same amount for Furman. The teams combined for just four free throw attempts with the Paladins knocking down two of their three tries. Furman also benefitted from 18 points by its bench.

The Paladins picked up right where they left off as the second half began, out-scoring UNCG 10-4 to extend their advantage to 18 points (42-24). A triple by Goins sliced the deficit to 44-31 at the 12:20 mark, but the Spartans scored just one point, a free throw by freshman guard Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) over the next four minutes – allowing Furman to take a 56-32 lead on a three by Murphy. UNCG was able to cut the lead under 20 a handful of times but the deficit proved too large to overcome.

The Spartans return to the court Monday, making the short trip to Elon for a 7 p.m. tip.
