GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNCG women's tennis team fell to state rival UNC Wilmington, 6-1, Sunday night at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
UNCW took the first point of the evening after winning the doubles point. Sophomores Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./ East Chapel Hill) and Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/Newcastle Under Lyme School) fell to Angie Sekley and Alyssa Ritchie 8-1 at No. 2 doubles. The Seahawks earned the doubles point after Kelly Cameron and Miller Hales defeated Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and Asha Iyengar (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
Ellis got the sole point for the Spartans for the day with a win at No. 4 singles with a win over Cameron. Cameron took the first set 6-4, but Ellis bounced back to take the second set 6-4 and the tiebreaker 10-8.
At No. 1 singles, Falcon fell to Sekely in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Junior Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla. /Broward Virtual School) fell in a hard battle to Olga Blank with two tiebreaker sets at No 2. singles. Blank took set one 7-6 (8-6) and set two 3-3 (7-5).
At No. 3 singles, Grinberg fell to Ritchie 6-3, 6-2.
Freshman Masey DeMoss (Mayodan, N.C./McMichael) fell to Christine Kharkevich at No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-4.
At No. 6 singles, Iyengar fell to Alix Theodossiou 6-1, 6-0.
With the loss, the Spartans fall to 1-4 on the season.
Next up, UNCG will welcome in Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Feb. 22. at 2 p.m.
