Men's Tennis Earns Comeback 4-3 Victory at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The UNCG men's tennis team rallied back after dropping the doubles to take down Campbell, 4-3, Wednesday at the Nisbet Tennis Center.  

The Spartans (5-2) continue their recent hot streak earning their fifth-straight victory while stopping Campbell's three-match streak to fall to 3-4 on the season.

With the match tied 3-3, sophomore Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland), who recently earned a No. 106 ITA ranking, came back from a 5-1 deficit in the final set to clinch the match against Dominik Kaniewski, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Mack won the last six games in the third set to give UNCG the 4-3 win at No. 5 singles.

In doubles, Campbell took a 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches. At No. 3 doubles, Marthinus Visser and Jean-Marc Krone defeated freshman Nazhone Wilkins (Burnsville, Minnesota/Home schooled) and sophomore Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista), 8-3. The Camels earned the point with an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles as Fernando Guillen and Rik van Gerwen outlasted senior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankera, Turkey/METU Development Foundation) and Mack.

The final match at No. 1 doubles sophomore James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) and junior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) were leading 7-4 against Dominik Kaniewski and Adrien Rossignon but the match went unfinished.

In singles, UNCG tied the match at 1-1 after Phillips won in straight sets against van Gerwen, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Murray gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead after a 6-3, 6-4 win against Rossignon at No. 4 singles.

Campbell tied the match at 2-2 after Guillen defeated Sarioglu, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 singles. Junior Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) earned a tough 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles against Krone.

At No. 2 singles, the Camels tied the match at 3-3 after Visser defeated Dougherty, 7-6 (10-8), 6-2. Dougherty lost the first set tiebreaker 10-8.

UNCG will start conference play against Chattanooga March 2 at noon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
