Women's Tennis Drops Final Home Match to Elon, 6-1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's tennis team won the doubles point but lost four third sets resulting in a 6-1 loss against rival Elon Thursday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.

With the loss the Blue and Gold fall to 7-12, 4-4 SoCon record while Elon improves to 11-8, 5-3 in league action.

The Spartans took the first point of the match with two doubles victories. Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./ East Chapel Hill) defeated Bryn Khoury and Taylor Casey 8-3 at No. 3 doubles. Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla. /Broward Virtual School) and Devon Sutherland (Lake Wylie, S.C./ Clover) secured the doubles point with a 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles over Barbora Lazarova and Jordan Johnston. At No. 2 doubles, Yasmin Franco(Largo, Fla./Indian Rocks Christian) and Dilara Yurtkuran (Istanbul, Turkey/ Gunes Koleji) fell to Frida Jansaker and Maria Camara Ruiz, 8-3.

Elon evened the score at one, as Khoury defeated Gammie 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.

The Phoenix took over the lead with a win at No. 6 singles. Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/Newcastle Under Lyme School) fell to Tolley Rice, 6-4, 6-2.

The match came down to the final four matches with both teams fighting for four points. The No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No 5. singles matches all required third sets.

At No. 1 singles, Yurtkuran fell in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-3) in set one, but bounced back to take set two 6-3. Johnston took set three 6-3 to put Elon up 3-1.

Maria Camara-Ruiz clinched the victory for Elon with a three set win over Grinberg. Grinberg won set one 7-6 (7-3) at No. 5 singles, but Maria Camara-Ruiz took set two and three 6-3, 6-1.

Falcon forced a third set as well at No. 2 singles, after falling 6-0 in set one, but grabbing a 6-4 set two win and fell 6-3 in set three.

At No. 4 singles, Franco fell in set one 7-5, but dominated set two 6-2, forcing the third set. The third set was a hard fought battle but Franco fell 6-4.

The Spartans will wrap up the regular season on the road against Davidson Saturday April 12 at 1 p.m.
