Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – Chattanooga led wire-to-wire as the UNCG women's basketball team dropped a 81-46 contest Monday night at Fleming Gymnasium on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The Spartans fall to 5-14 overall and are 0-4 in the SoCon. Chattanooga improves to 16-3, 4-0 in conference play having won 12-straight games and 38 SoCon games in a row.
The Mocs used hot shooting to earn a 35-point victory against the Spartans. Chattanooga only missed 15 total shots to shot a blistering 65.1 percent from the field off 28-of-43. The Mocs were also 12-of-16 from the three-point line off 13 assists.
UNCG did outrebound Chattanooga 35-to-34 and grabbed 21 offensive rebounds. The Spartans also won the turnover battle at 19-to-17. The Blue and Gold were able to come away with 11 steals and 19 miscues from the Mocs.
Sophomore Mariah Wilson (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) scored a career-high eight points (4-of-9) and grabbed a career-best eight rebounds. Junior guard Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) added eight points with five rebounds and three steals. Senior Jarae Savage (Marietta, Ga./North Cobb) had seven points and seven rebounds.
Chattanooga opened the game on a 10-2 run on a layup by Keiana Gilbert with 14:11 remaining in the half. The Mocs would go on a 14-6 spurt to push the lead to 24-8 off a jumper by Moses Johnson at the 6:53 mark.
With 3:18 remaining, Chattanooga would take a 21-point advantage off a three-pointer from Johnson to make the score 36-15. The Mocs would end the half on a 11-3, including a three-pointer from Chelsey Shumpert with less than five seconds on the clock.
In the second half, the Spartans opened with a 6-0 run forcing a Chattanooga timeout after a jumper from senior Jessica Collins (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield/Eckerd College) to make the score 47-24 at the 17:33 mark.
UNCG would outscore Chattanooga 14-13 in a eight minute span capped by a layup from sophomore India Timpton (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) to make the score 60-38 at the 9:44 mark.
The Mocs would answer with a 14-4 run to push their lead to 74-42 with 3:11 left in the contest. Chattanooga would cruise to the finish line outscoring UNCG 7-4 the rest of the game to make the final score 81-46.
Chattanooga had four players in double figures with Shumpert leading the way with 19 points (6-of-9 shooting). Ka'Vonne Towns had 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
UNCG travels to Western Carolina Saturday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. in Cullowhee, N.C.
