Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNCG women's basketball team fell short on the road at Wofford, 77-64, Saturday at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
The Spartans fall to 5-16 overall and are 0-6 in the SoCon. Wofford picks up its first conference win improving to 6-15, 1-5 in SoCon action.
UNCG tied its season high with 17 steals and forced 27 turnovers for the Terriers but it wasn't enough. The Spartans only converted 21 points off those miscues and an early second half run from Wofford was the difference.
The Blue and Gold shot 38.2 percent on 26-of-68 shooting from the field while Wofford shot 56.9 percent on 29-of-51 from the floor. The Terriers also were stellar from the free throw line going 15-of-16 to seal the victory.
Junior guard Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) led the team in scoring pouring in 20 points, including 15 in the second half off 7-of-14 from the field and pulled down five rebounds. Sophomore Shanese Harris (Chesapeake, Va/Western Branch) added 10 first half points and classmate Jade Scaife (Fort Washington, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had 11 points and five rebounds.
Jordan Frazier led all scorers with 24 points (9-of-17), three assists and three steals in the victory for Wofford. Grayson Pinholster added 16 points and nine rebounds.
In the first half, both teams came out scoring as the game was tied 10-10 after a layup from Aston Fleming at the 13:28 mark.
Just four minutes later, UNCG would take a 18-12 lead after a fastbreak layup from Mason with 9::06 remaining in the period.
Wofford would answer with a 7-0 run to take its first lead at 19-18 off a layup from Pinholster with under eight minutes left in the half.
Both team would be tied again after a three-pointer from Frazier to make the score 26-26 with 2:21 remaining till intermission.
Mason would hit a three to give the Spartans a 34-32 lead but a layup from Kentra Washington in the closing seconds kept the game tied at halftime at 34-34.
The Terriers would come out on a 8-0 run to open the second half to make the score 42-34 after a three-pointer from Frazier just three minutes into the half.
UNCG would go on a 9-4 run to cut the lead to 46-43 after another fastbreak layup from Mason at the 14:29 mark. With under eight minutes left, Wofford would hold a 59-51 advantage after a layup from Pinholster. Senior guard Jessica Collins (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield/Eckerd College) hit a three-pointer to make it 59-54 but Wofford would not let UNG get any closer.
The Terriers received a spark from Chanel Stokes who would score the next seven Wofford points to push the lead to 10 at 66-56 at the 4:11 mark.
Wofford would hit multiple free throws to ice the game and take a 13-point home win over the Spartans, 77-64.
UNCG returns home to face Furman Monday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. at Fleming Gymnasium.
