Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's basketball team (1-0) opened the 2015-16 season with a 71-52 win over Pfeiffer in Fleming Gymnasium Friday night. Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) led all scorers with 20 points while India Timpton (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) recorded the first double-double of her career with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Pfeiffer outscored UNCG 17-16 in the first period but a 10-3 run by the Spartans to open the second frame put the Blue & Gold on top by seven points, 20-20. UNCG took its largest lead of the game just before halftime when Jade Scaife (Fort Washington, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made a fast break layup for a 35-24 lead at the buzzer.
UNCG shot 34.4 percent from the field in the half and capitalized on 17 Falcons turnovers. Mason led all scorers with 12 points while Scaife added 10 points. Meg Pritchard led the Falcons with nine points in the opening half while her team shot 36.4 percent from the field.
Pfeiffer had its highest-scoring period in the third with 18 points but a 21-point final frame by UNCG put the Falcons to bed. Timpton scored nine of her 12 points in the second half while Mason and Shanese Harris (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) each had eight points.
UNCG improved to shoot 44.1 percent in the second half and connected on 6-of-7 shots from the free throw line. Pritchard had another nine points in the second half to lead the Falcons with 18 points in the loss.
Scaife was second on the team in scoring with 15 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Bailey Williams (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood) was the fourth Spartan to score in double figures with 11 points.
