GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's tennis team fell behind early and couldn't recover in a 6-1 loss at Charlotte Sunday night at the Charlotte Indoor Tennis Club.

The Spartans fall to 2-2 on the season and the 49ers improved to 3-1 with the victory.  

In doubles, Charlotte jumped out to a 1-0 advantage after winning two of three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, senior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) and freshman Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) continued their winning ways after a 6-1 victory against Vikram Hundal and Jack Williams.

The 49ers won the next two matches to claim the doubles point after Alex Calott and Forrest Edwards defeated juniors Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) and Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista), 6-1, at No. 2 doubles.

Paul Cisti and Jordi Massalle Ferrer took down freshman Logan Walker (Stuart, Fla./Morningside) and redshirt sophomore William Albright (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley), 6-3, at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, Charlotte won five of six singles matches to complete a 6-1 victory against the Spartans.

At No. 5 singles, Williams won in straight sets against Murray, 6-2, 6-3 to make it 2-0 49ers. Hundal defeated Mack in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

Sophomore Warren Bryan (Greensboro, N.C./The Early College at Guilford/Longwood) fell to Calott in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Thompson remained undefeated in singles with a straight sets victory against Nate Shanok, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.

Senior Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) lost to Ferrer, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. In the final match, Phillips battled but fell short to Edwards, 6-0, 2-6, 7-5 at No. 1 singles.

The Blue and Gold will travel to Conway, S.C. for a pair of matches against Richmond (Feb. 21) and Coastal Carolina (Feb. 22) next weekend.
