Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's basketball team forced 26 Wofford turnovers leading to a 65-59 victory Monday night at Fleming Gymnasium.
The Spartans snapped a 15-game losing streak improving to 6-22 and earned their first conference win with a 1-12 record. Wofford falls to 8-20 and is 3-10 in conference play clinching the No. 6 seed in the upcoming SoCon tournament.
Junior guard Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) had a game-high 23 points (6-of-16), including going 9-for-10 from the free throw line. Mason tops 20 points for the eighth time this season and third-straight game with 20-plus.
Senior Jarae Savage (Marietta, Ga./North Cobb) added 16 points off 8-of-16 from the field and had four rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Bailey Williams (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood) finished with nine points and five rebounds.
UNCG suffocated Wofford with a full-court pressure defense forcing 26 miscues and the Spartans swiped 14 steals in the victory.
The Blue and Gold were a stellar 13-of-15 from the free throw line to help seal the victory. UNCG shot 34.3 percent off 24-of-70 from the field. Wofford finished shooting 34.5 percent off 19-of-55 from the floor.
Ashton Fleming led the Terriers in scoring with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Chanel Stokes added 11 points and Kentra Washington scored 10 points.
In the first half, Wofford jumped out to a 6-0 forcing a timeout from UNCG after a layup from Fleming with 16:08 left in the period.
UNCG would bounce back with a 12-0 run thanks to back-to-back jumpers from Mason to make the score 12-6 with 9:51 remaining in the half.
With 5:23 left in the half, the Spartans led 20-12 off a layup from sophomore Mariah Wilson (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta).
The Terriers would outscore UNCG 11-4 to end the half trailing by just one at 24-23 off two free throws from Stokes. Mason led the way with eight points and Savage had six points for the Blue and Gold.
The second half would start with the Spartans taking a four-point lead at 33-29 off a jumper from Savage with 15:43 left in the contest.
Wofford would battle back to take the lead at 38-37 off two free throws from Frazier after a 9-4 run with 12:34 on the clock.
With 8:47 remaining, senior guard Jessica Collins (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield/Eckerd College) hit a clutch three-pointer to give UNCG a 47-40 lead to cap off a 10-2.
UNCG's lead would balloon to 10 points off a three-pointer from Williams to make the score 56-46 with just under three minutes left in the game.
The Blue and Gold would hit 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to complete the win and held Wofford under 60-points with the final score 65-59.
UNCG remains home to face Western Carolina Friday, Feb. 27 for Senior Night at 7 p.m. at Fleming Gymnasium.
