GREENSBORO, N.C. – After dropping the doubles point, the UNCG men's tennis team stormed back to win five of six singles matches to earn a 5-2 win in the season opener against Campbell Saturday at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
The Spartans improve to 1-1 on the season while Campbell falls to 1-4 with the loss.
The Camels earned a close doubles point after winning two of the three matches to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) and freshman Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) defeated Steven Billington and Jonathan O'Neal, 8-4 at No. 1 doubles.
Campbell took the next two matches as Lukas Schaefer and Nicolas Rakitin took down freshman Logan Walker (Stuart, Fla./Morningside Academy) and sophomore Warren Bryan (Greensboro, N.C./The Early College at Guilford/Longwood), 8-4.
In the final doubles match, senior Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) and Redshirt sophomore William Albright (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) led 6-5 but lost three-straight games to Lorenz Schwab and Adrien Rossignon to fall 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, the Blue and Gold came charging back as junior Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) tied the match at 1-1 after winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 against Marthinus Visser at No. 5 singles. Phillips won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 against Billington at No. 1 singles to give UNCG a 2-1 advantage.
Campbell would tie the match at 2-2 after Schaefer defeated Bryan, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. At No. 4 singles, Smith picked up a 6-2, 6-4 victory against O'Neal to make it 3-2 UNCG.
Mack would clinch the match with a 6-3, 7-5 win against Rakitin, at No. 2 singles. In the final match, Thompson would defeated Jean-Marc Krone, 6-2, 6-7 (8-10), 1-0 (10-6) at No. 6 singles. Thompson lost the second set tiebreaker 10-8 but came back to win the third set super tiebreaker 10-6 to secure the team's fifth point.
The Spartans will conclude the weekend against Norfolk State Sunday, Feb. 8 at Noon at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
