CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UNCG women's tennis team dropped a non-conference match on the road at Charleston Southern, 7-0, Thursday at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex.
The Spartans drop to 4-5 and Charleston Southern improves to 9-1 with the victory.
The Buccaneers won two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Marketa Placha and Sophie Cloessner defeated junior Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and sophomore Masey DeMoss (Mayodan, N.C./McMichael), 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
Charleston Southern clinched the doubles point with a 8-5 win as Nicolin Luecke and Yvonne Hubler edged senior Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and freshman Blaine Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga./Saint Pius X) at No. 2 doubles.
In the final doubles match, senior Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School) and freshman Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain/Queenswood School) earned a 9-7 victory against Angelica Sidorenko and Mi'Kola Cooper at No. 1 doubles.
In singles, Charleston Southern continued to earn wins as Placha made it 2-0 overall with a straight sets win against junior Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Tile Hill Wood School), 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles.
Cloessner gave CSU a 3-0 advantage with a straight sets victory at No. 6 singles against Grinberg, 6-2, 6-0. Luecke clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win against junior Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/Newcastle Under Lyme School) at No. 4 singles.
Cooper defeated Blythe at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-1 to make the score 5-0 Charleston Southern. Hubler won in straight sets against Gammie, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
In the final match, Falcon battled in the first set but fell to Sidorenko, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
The Blue and Gold end their spring break trip with a non-conference match against the College of Charleston Saturday, March 14 at 3 p.m.
