Women's Tennis Ends Spring Break Trip with Loss at CofC

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UNCG women's tennis team fell on the road to end its spring break trip at the College of Charleston, 6-1, Saturday at the Patriots Point Tennis Center.

The Spartans drop to 4-6 overall and the College of Charleston improves to 3-10 with the win.

In doubles, the Cougars took a 1-0 lead after winning two doubles matches. Samantha Maddox and Mara Argyriou defeated junior Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Tile Hill Wood School) and freshman Blaine Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga./Saint Pius X), 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.

The College of Charleston clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles as Jenny Falcone and Katherine Schofield took down senior Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School) and freshman Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain/Queenswood School).

Junior Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and sophomore Masey DeMoss (Mayodan, N.C./McMichael) were trailing 3-4 to Grace Baker and Helena Nyikos when the doubles point was won. 

In singles, Brooke McAmis won in straight sets against Gammie, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Schofield defeated junior Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/Newcastle Under Lyme School), 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles to pull ahead 3-0.

Maddox clinched the match for the Cougars with a 6-2, 6-3 win against senior Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) at No. 2 singles.  

CofC's Falcone won in straight sets against Blythe, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 at No. 4 singles to take a 5-0 lead.

The final two match both went the distance in third set super tiebreakers. Nyikos outlasted Grinberg, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-4) at No. 5 singles. Grinberg forced a third set after winning the second set 7-5 but fell short in the third, 10-4.

Boaz held on to defeat Sarah Jane Jones, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 6 singles. Boaz lost the second set, 6-7 (7-9), but bounced back to win the third set, 10-8 to claim UNCG's lone point. 

The Blue and Gold are back in action in Rock Hill, S.C. to face Winthrop Thursday, March 19 at 2 p.m.
