GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's tennis team dropped the doubles point but rallied back to defeat Richmond, 4-1, Sunday at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
The Spartans improve to 5-6 on the season and Richmond falls to 7-6 with the loss.
In doubles, the Spiders won two of three doubles match to claim a 1-0 lead. Junior Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) and senior Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) earned a 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles against Jonathan Quenard and Caleb Troy.
At No. 1 doubles, Freshman Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) and senior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) lost to Ethan Dunbar and Jacob Dunber, 8-4.
Richmond clinched the doubles point with a 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles as James Aronson and Canyon Teague defeated redshirt sophomore William Albright (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) and sophomore Warren Bryan (Greensboro, N.C./The Early College at Guilford/Longwood).
In singles, the Spartans rallied winning four-straight singles matches to defeat the Spiders, 4-1. Albright tied the match at 1-1 after a straight sets win against Aronson, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
Smith gave UNCG a 2-1 lead after a win at No. 4 singles against Troy, 6-1, 6-4. Phillips earned another victory at No. 1 singles in straight sets against Ethan Dunbar, 6-0, 7-6 (7-1).
Bryan clinched the win against Quenard, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) in straight sets at No. 5 singles.
Thompson won the first set against Jacob Dunbar, 6-4 but fell in the second set 5-7 as the match went unfinished. Mack won the first set against Teague, 6-3 but was trailing 5-6 when the match was called.
The Blue and Gold remain home for a two-match homestand starting Wednesday, March 18 against East Carolina at 2 p.m. at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
