GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's tennis team dominated singles play winning five of six matches to easily defeat Wofford, 6-1, Saturday at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
The Spartans improve to 5-6 with a 1-1 conference record and Wofford falls to 7-7 with a 1-2 conference mark.
In doubles, UNCG took a 1-0 lead after claiming two of three doubles matches. Freshman Blaine Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga./Saint Pius X) and senior Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) defeated Catherine Martin and Mareli Sanchez, 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.
Freshman Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain/Queenswood School) and senior Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School) clinched the doubles point with a 8-3 win against Kalli Karas and Lauren Reid, at No. 1 doubles.
In the final match, Samantha Russell and Taylor Carlson defeated Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and Masey DeMoss (Mayodan, N.C./McMichael), 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Wofford tied the match after Audrey Coventry earned a 4-1 retired win against Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Tile Hill Wood School) at No. 2 singles.
Falcon gave UNCG a 2-1 lead after a 6-0, 6-3 win against Karas, at No. 3 singles. Gammie downed Martin, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
Junior Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/Newcastle Under Lyme School) won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
In the final two matches both went to third set super tiebreakers with the Spartans winning both. Grinberg outlasted Sanchez, 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4) and Blythe edged Reid, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5).
The Spartans will finish the weekend in Cullowhee, N.C. against Western Carolina Sunday, March 22 at 2 p.m.
