WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNCG women's tennis team fell behind early and dropped a non-conference match on the road at UNCW, 5-2, Tuesday at the UNCW Tennis Courts.
The Spartans fall to 5-7 on the season and UNCW improves to 7-6 with the victory.
The Seahawks took a 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. Annika Sillanpaa and Christina Kharkevitch defeated senior Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School) and freshman Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain/Queenswood School), 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.
UNCW clinched the doubles point with a 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles as Hollie Champion and Alix Theodossiou took down sophomore Masey DeMoss (Mayodan, N.C./McMichael) and junior Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill).
In the last doubles match, Alyssa Ritchie and Miller Hales defeated senior Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and freshman Blaine Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga./Saint Pius X), 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, Kharkevitch won in straight sets against junior Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/Newcastle Under Lyme School), 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 singles.
Sillanpaa gave UNCW a 3-0 lead after a straight sets win against Falcon, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Ritchie clinched the match for the Seahawks at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Gammie.
Theodossiou made it 5-0 after a 6-3, 6-2 win against Blythe at No. 4 singles.
UNCG won the final two matches to make the final score 5-2. Grinberg won in straight sets against Hales, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Boaz earned her third-straight victory after defeating Hamilton Lovett in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5 singles.
