GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's tennis team earned a tough 4-3 victory against Appalachian State Saturday at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
The Spartans improve to 6-7 on the season and App. State falls to 6-11.
UNCG won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Tile Hill Wood School) and sophomore Masey DeMoss (Mayodan, N.C./McMichael) earned a 8-4 victory against Sarah King and McKayla Zupan at No. 3 doubles.
At No. 2 doubles, senior Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and freshman Blaine Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga./Saint Pius X) took down Melissa Machado and Megan Mullen, 8-5.
In the final doubles match, senior Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School) and freshman Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain/Queenswood School) defeated Mackenzie LaSure and Clare Cox, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles.
In singles, Falcon won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles to give UNCG a 2-0 lead. Junior Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/Newcastle Under Lyme School) won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles against Brianna Armellino.
Clare Cox defeated Gammie 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 at No. 1 singles and Gabrielle Wreder took down Blythe, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 4 singles.
Appalachian State tied the match at 3-3 after Machado won in straight sets against Boaz, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.
Junior Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) prevailed in three sets against Zupan, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 6 singles to help the Spartans defeat Appalachian State, 4-3.
The Blue and Gold will face Charlotte on the road Monday, March 30 at 2:30 p.m.
