CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UNCG women's tennis team battled but came up just short in a 4-3 loss at Charlotte Monday at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
The Spartans sit at 6-8 overall and Charlotte improves to 9-8 with the victory.
Charlotte took a 1-0 lead after winning two of three doubles matches. Senior Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and freshman Blaine Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga./Saint Pius X) defeated Lisa Grosselius and Natsuko Takayanagi, 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.
At No. 1 doubles, Fluer Holtkamp and Victoria Pahlett earned a 8-4 win against senior Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School) and freshman Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain/Queenswood School).
In the last doubles match, Tyler Baker and Macy Vonderschmidt edged sophomore Masey DeMoss (Mayodan, N.C./McMichael) and junior Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Tile Hill Wood School), 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Holtkamp gave Charlotte a 2-0 lead after defeating junior Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/Newcastle Under Lyme School), 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
Falcon cut the lead to 2-1 after earning a 6-2, 6-0 win against Vonderschmidt at No. 2 singles. Tyler Baker made it 3-1 Charlotte after a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Blythe at No. 5 singles.
Anane won in straight sets against Grosselius, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Gammie tied the match at 3-3 with a win at No. 1 singles against Pahlett, 7-5, 6-4.
In the final match, junior Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) battled but came up just short against Takayanagi, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 at No. 6 singles.
