BOONE, N.C. – The UNCG men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 non-conference match against Appalachian State Tuesday at the Appalachian Tennis Courts.
The Spartans fall to 8-8 on the season and the Mountaineers improve to 8-9 with the victory.
In doubles, Appalachian State won two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) and senior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) defeated Zach Bost and Jan-Willem Kleynhans, 8-6 at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 3 doubles, Oliver Casey and Trey Morris took down junior Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) and classmate Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista), 8-4.
The Mountaineers clinched the doubles point with a 8-6 win as Jack Maddocks and Scott Webster edged sophomore William Albright (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) and redshirt freshman James Gray (Jacksonville, Fla./The Oaks School) at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, App. State took a 2-0 lead after Bost defeated Murray, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Morris made it 3-0 Appalachian State after a 6-2, 6-2 win against Gray at No. 6 singles.
Webster clinched the win for the Mountaineers with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Mack at No. 3 singles. Albright fell just short at No. 5 singles against Kleynhans, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Thompson battled to earn a three set win against Maddocks, 7-6, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 2 singles. In the final match, Phillips fell in a third set super tiebreaker against Casey, 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7).
The Blue and Gold return for a pair of home SoCon matches starting against Wofford Saturday, April 4 at noon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
