ELON, N.C. – The UNCG women's tennis team lost a tough road match at Elon, 5-2, Wednesday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Spartans drop to 4-3 on the season and Elon improves to 5-4 with the victory.
The Phoenix took a 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. Kirsten Ward and Barbora Lazarova defeated senior Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School) and freshman Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain/Queenswood School), 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. Elon clinched the doubles point with a 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles as Olivia Lucas and Maria Camara edged senior Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and freshman Blaine Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga./Saint Pius X).
In the last doubles match, Taylor Casey and Erica Braschi outlasted sophomore Masey DeMoss (Mayodan, N.C./McMichael) and junior Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill), 8-7 (7-5), at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Elon took a 2-0 lead after Lazarova won in straight sets against Blythe, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
The Phoenix made it 3-0 after Braschi defeated junior Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/Newcastle Under Lyme School), 6-1, 6-3, at No. 4 singles.
UNCG picked up a point at No. 2 singles as Falcon earned a third set win against Lucas, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Falcon lost the second set, 4-6, but bounced back to win the third, 6-4.
Elon clinched the match as Kamilla Beisenova rallied back against DeMoss in the third set, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 singles. Gammie gave the Spartans their second point at No. 1 singles earning a tight third set win against Ward, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.
In the final singles match, Camara Ruiz defeated Grinberg in a three set thriller, 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3. Grinberg extended the match with a 7-6 (7-3) second set tiebreaker win but fell short in the third set, 6-3.
