GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's tennis team took the doubles point but Georgia Southern came away with a close 4-3 victory Sunday at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
The Spartans sit at 4-4 on the season with back-to-back 4-3 losses on the weekend. Georgia Southern improves 5-6 with the win.
In doubles, UNCG jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning two of three doubles matches. The Eagles duo of Joan Carles Alcala and Christian Kerrigan took down freshman James Gray (Jacksonville, Fla./The Oaks School) and Logan Walker (Stuart, Fla./Morningside Academy), 8-3, at No. 3 doubles.
Freshman Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) and senior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) defeated Jose Landin and Kyle Hoffman, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles.
In the deciding doubles match, redshirt sophomore William Albright (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) and sophomore Warren Bryan (Greensboro, N.C./The Early College at Guilford/Longwood) outlasted Albert Codina Sala and Ristomatti Lanne, 8-7 (8-6) in a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, Thompson pushed UNCG's lead to 2-0 after a straight sets win against Landin, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
Georgia Southern would tie the match with two straight wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Alcala defeated Albright, 6-2, 6-1 and Nico de Groof won in straight sets against Walker, 6-2, 6-2.
Phillips gave the Spartans a 3-2 lead after winning in straight sets against Lanne, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, at No. 1 singles. Sala tied the match for the Eagles at 3-3 after defeating junior Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland), 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), at No. 2 singles.
In the final match, senior Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) forced a third set tiebreaker but Hoffman was able to win the breaker 7-4 to clinch the match at No. 3 singles. Hoffman earned the win with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) match in a close final set tiebreaker.
