CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The UNCG women's tennis team opened Southern Conference play on the road at Chattanooga falling 5-2 Sunday at the UTC Tennis Courts.
The Spartans drop to 4-4 and 0-1 in conference play and Chattanooga improves to 8-2 and is 1-0 in SoCon action.
The Mocs took a 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. Kayla Jones and Samantha Caswell defeated senior Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School) and freshman Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain/Queenswood School), 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.
Chattanooga clinched the doubles point with a 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles as Kelsey Coots and Kaylene Chadwell took down senior Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and freshman Blaine Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga./Saint Pius X).
In the last doubles match, Claire Mulyadi and Katie Polk earned a 8-6 win against sophomore Masey DeMoss (Mayodan, N.C./McMichael) and classmate Yasmin Franco (Largo, Fla./Indian Rocks Christian), at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Alison Storie gave Chattanooga a 2-0 lead after defeating Franco, 5-1, retired at No. 6 singles. Jones made it 3-0 Mocs after a straight sets win against junior Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Tile Hill Wood School), 6-4, 6-0, at No. 1 singles.
Coots clinched the match with a straight sets win at No. 2 singles against Gammie, 6-4, 6-3. Chattanooga earned its fifth point after Caswell defeated Blythe, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
The Blue and Gold won the final two matches to make the score 5-2 Chattanooga. Junior Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/Newcastle Under Lyme School) won in straight sets against, Mulyadi, 7-6 (7-0), 6-4.
Falcon won a third set super tiebreaker against Chadwell, 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 1-0 (10-8). Falcon was able to win the super tiebreaker, 10-8, to earn UNCG's second overall point.
