GREENVILLE, S.C. – The UNCG men's tennis team fell to Furman, 6-1, Sunday in the regular season finale at Mickel Tennis Center.
The Spartans finish the regular season with a 11-9 record going 3-4 in Southern Conference action. Furman improves to 7-14 and is 5-0 in conference play. UNCG sits in fourth place and could claim the fourth seed with a Wofford loss against Furman next week.
In doubles, Furman won two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) and senior Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) defeated Jacob Behal and Stefan Rhodes, 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
At No. 2 doubles, Adam Steryous and Cameron Green took down sophomore William Albright (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) and classmate Warren Bryan (Greensboro, N.C./The Early College at Guilford/Longwood), 8-4.
In the final doubles match, Matt Browne and Ben Horst clinched the doubles point over freshman Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) and senior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood), 8-2, at No. 1 doubles.
In singles, Albright tied the match at 1-1 after a 6-4, 6-2 win against Rhodes at No. 6 singles. The Paladins regained the lead as Green defeated Mack, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 3 singles.
Horst made it 3-1 Furman with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Smith at No. 4 singles. Browne clinched the victory for Furman against Thompson in three sets, 6-4 1-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
Steryous won in straight sets against Phillips, 6-1 7-6 (7-3) at No. 1 singles. In the final match, Behal outlasted junior Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista), 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 5 singles. Murray lost a close third set super tiebreaker 10-8.
The Spartans will be back in action Friday, April 24 at the first round of the SoCon Tournament hosted by Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
