Women's Tennis Drops Regular Season Finale at Furman, 4-3

GREENVILLE S.C. – The UNCG women's tennis team won the doubles point but came up just short in singles in the regular season finale against Furman, 4-3, Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center.  

With the loss, the Spartans clinch the No. 5 seed with a 8-11 record and a 2-4 conference mark. Furman earns the No. 4 seed with the win improving to 8-13, 4-3 in SoCon matches.

In doubles, UNCG won two of three matches to claim a 1-0 lead. Junior Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Tile Hill Wood School) and sophomore Masey DeMoss (Mayodan, N.C./McMichael) took down Karlee Bryde and Harper Caswell, 8-4 at No.3 doubles.

At No. 2 doubles, senior Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and freshman Blaine Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga./Saint Pius X) clinched the doubles point with a 8-6 win against Blair Martin and Alejandra Gil.

In the final doubles match, Alex Moreno-Kaste and Ansley Speaks defeated freshman Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain/Queenswood School) and senior Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School), 8-4 at No. 1 doubles.

In singles, Bryde tied the match at 1-1 after a 6-2, 6-3 win against Blythe at No. 4 singles. Martin gave Furman a 2-1 lead after defeating junior Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/Newcastle Under Lyme School), 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.

DeMoss made it 2-2 after a straight sets win against Gil, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. Speaks won a three set match against Falcon, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 at No. 2 singles to give Furman a 3-2 advantage. 

Junior Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) tied the match at 3-3 overall with a three set win against Caswell, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.

With the match tied at 3-3, Moreno-Kaste clinched the win for Furman after a straight sets win against Gammie, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 at No. 1 singles.

The Blue and Gold will head back to the Mickel Tennis Center for a rematch against host Furman (No. 4 seed) Friday, April 24 at 9 a.m. in the first round of the SoCon Tournament.
