GREENVILLE S.C. – The UNCG women's tennis team battled but fell just short against host Furman, 4-3, Friday at the Southern Conference Tournament held at the Mickel Tennis Center.
The Spartans finish the 2014-15 campaign with a 8-12 overall record. The Paladins will move on to the semifinals Saturday.
With the match tied 3-3, senior Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) lost a close third set against Ansley Speaks, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Falcon extended the match with a 6-4 second set win but lost the third set, 6-3 to give Furman the victory.
In doubles, Furman took a 1-0 lead after winning two of three doubles matches. Alex Moreno-Kaste and Speaks defeated freshman Corinne Blythe (Leicestershire, Great Britain/Queenswood School) and senior Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School), 8-4 at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 3 doubles, Karlee Bryde and Harper Caswell clinched the doubles point with a 8-6 win against sophomore Masey DeMoss (Mayodan, N.C./McMichael) and junior Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Tile Hill Wood School).
Falcon and freshman Blaine Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga./Saint Pius X) went unfinished after holding a 6-5 lead against Blair Martin and Alejandra Gil at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, Blythe defeated Caswell, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles to tie the match at 1-1. Bryde gave Furman a 2-1 lead after defeating junior Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/Newcastle Under Lyme School), 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
The Paladins made it 3-1 after Moreno-Kaste won in straight sets against Gammie, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Anane cut the lead to 3-2 after a 7-5, 6-2 win against Martin at No. 3 singles.
Junior Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) earned a comeback win in three sets against Gil, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 singles to even the match at 3-3. Grinberg lost the first set 1-6, before storming back to win set two 6-4 and the final set 6-3.
