GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's tennis team defeated SoCon member Chattanooga, 4-3, Sunday at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
The Spartans have won four of its last five matches improving to 10-8 overall and hold a 3-3 conference record. Chattanooga falls to 4-13 and has a 1-4 SoCon record.
In doubles, UNCG swept the doubles point winning all three matches. Junior Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) and senior Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) earned a 8-3 win against Nick Wingord and Luke Saunders at No. 3 doubles.
At No. 2 doubles, sophomore William Albright (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) and classmate Warren Bryan (Greensboro, N.C./The Early College at Guilford/Longwood) clinched the doubles point with a 8-6 win against Pavels Grigorjevs and Nic Wilson.
In the final doubles match, freshman Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) and senior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) outlasted John Peacey and Lucas Plesky, 8-6 at No. 1 doubles.
In singles, Phillips won in straight sets against Grigorjevs, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Phillips improved to 15-3 in singles and is 5-1 against SoCon opponents.
Albright gave UNCG a 3-0 lead after defeating Gino Delavalle, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 singles. Wilson earned a 7-5, 6-0 win against junior Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) at No. 5 singles.
With the Spartans leading 3-1, Mack clinched the victory against Saunders, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Plesky outlasted Thompson in the third set, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
In the final match, Wingord earned Chattanooga's third point in a third set super tiebreaker against Smith, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 4 singles.
