GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's tennis team battled the entire match earning a dramatic 4-3 victory against rival Elon Wednesday at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
The Spartans improve to 11-8 overall and have won three-straight matches. Elon falls to 8-12 with the tough loss.
With the match tied at 3-3, it all came down to No. 3 singles as junior Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) faced Elon's Robert Lindgren. Mack won the first set 6-4 but lost the second set 4-6 to setup the winner take all third set. Lindgren jumped ahead 3-0 before Mack stormed back to win four of the next five games to tie the set at 4-4. The deciding match went to a tiebreaker at 6-6 and Mack went in front, 6-2. Lindgren saved three match points before Mack clinched the victory in a tiebreaker, 7-5.
In doubles, UNCG won two doubles matches, including a tiebreaker to clinch the doubles point. Freshman Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) and senior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) defeated Stefan Fortmann and Brian Kowalski, 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 2 doubles, sophomore William Albright (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) and classmate Warren Bryan (Greensboro, N.C./The Early College at Guilford/Longwood) clinched the doubles point with a thrilling 8-7 (7-2) win against Jordan Kaufman and Robert Lindgren. Albright and Bryan led 7-4 before Elon forced a tiebreaker and UNCG's duo came away with a 8-7, 7-2 win in the breaker.
In the final doubles match, Mack and senior Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) went unfinished as they were trailing 6-7 against Chris Humphreys and Juan Madrid at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Kaufman tied the match at 1-1 after defeating Thompson, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Kowalski gave Elon a 2-1 lead after a 6-4, 6-2 win against Smith at No. 4 singles.
Albright tied the match at 2-2 with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory against Humphreys at No. 6 singles. Phillips gave UNCG a 3-2 advantage with a senior day win at No. 1 singles against Formann, 7-5, 6-4. Phillips improved to 16-3 during the spring season.
Josh Luck tied the match at 3-3 with a 6-4, 6-1 win against junior Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) at No. 5 singles.
The Blue and Gold are riding momentum into their final match of the season this weekend at Furman Sunday, April 12 at 1 p.m.
